Etsy Star Seller is the badge Etsy gives to shops that have consistently offered buyers a great shopping experience over the last three months. To become a Star Seller, over the last three months you need to reply to at least 95 percent of first messages in a conversation within 24 hours, ship at least 95 percent of orders on time with tracking (or with a shipping label bought on Etsy), keep an average rating of at least 4.8, and make at least 5 orders and 300 USD in sales in the same period. Etsy checks eligibility on the 1st of every month; you start being considered for the badge about 90 days after your first sale.

What is the Star Seller badge?

Star Seller is Etsy's recognition program that measures customer service performance. Shops that meet the criteria show a badge next to their name and on their listings; when a buyer looks at a listing, they can tell at a glance that the seller replies quickly, ships on time and gets high ratings. The badge is not bought or applied for; Etsy awards or removes it automatically every month based on your shop data.

For a new shop, the badge is one way to build trust, especially while you still have few reviews. That said, the badge alone does not bring sales; listing quality, photos and price still decide. We cover the overall shop setup in our Etsy shop optimization guide.

Etsy Star Seller criteria (2026)

Etsy requires all four of these conditions to be met over the last three-month period:

  • Message response rate: a reply within 24 hours to at least 95 percent of first messages in a conversation. Only the first message that starts a conversation counts; later messages are not included in the rate. Auto-replies also count as responses.
  • On-time shipping and tracking: at least 95 percent of physical orders shipped within your stated processing time, with valid tracking or a shipping label purchased on Etsy.
  • Average rating: an average of at least 4.8 stars for reviews in the period.
  • Minimum volume: at least 5 orders and at least 300 USD in sales in the same three months.

You can still find articles online that mention old criteria such as "10 orders" or "95 percent five-star reviews". The current rule is an average rating of 4.8 and the 5 orders / 300 USD threshold; to be sure, always check the Star Seller page in the Etsy Help Center.

How is the review done?

  • On the 1st of every month: Etsy looks at the last three months of data. If you meet the criteria, it can take up to 24 hours for the badge to appear.
  • 90 days after the first sale: new shops become eligible about 90 days after their first sale; you also need to have met Etsy's customer service standards that month.
  • Tracking progress: in the Star Seller section of Shop Manager you can see where you stand on each criterion and which order or message pulled your rate down.
  • Vacation Mode: Vacation Mode does not pause the review; Etsy still looks at the last three months. Setting up an auto-reply for messages that arrive while you are away protects your response rate.

Does Star Seller affect search ranking?

According to Etsy, the badge itself does not directly affect search ranking; it makes it easier for buyers to find and shop from Star Seller shops. The data behind the badge does matter, though: Etsy prioritises shops that consistently follow its customer service standards in search, and takes signals such as average review rating, message response rate and case rate from the last three months into account in ranking. So working towards Star Seller supports your visibility even if you do not get the badge. We gathered the other ranking factors in how the Etsy algorithm works.

Not getting or losing the badge carries no penalty in itself. The customer service standards Etsy applies separately have lower thresholds than Star Seller; falling below those standards can affect search visibility.

Becoming a Star Seller step by step

1. Reply to messages within 24 hours

Turn on notifications from the Etsy Seller app on your phone and set fixed times during the day to check messages. Preparing reply texts in advance for frequent questions such as sizing, delivery time and personalisation saves time. Set up an auto-reply for weekends or holidays; auto-replies also count towards the rate. Still, do not forget to give the buyer a real answer afterwards.

2. Set a realistic processing time and add tracking on time

"On time" is measured against the processing time you set. If you keep it short and cannot keep up, the rate drops; entering a realistic time protects both the badge and your reviews. We explain shipping profiles and processing time settings in detail in our Etsy shipping settings guide.

For shops in the US and sellers listing in USD, tracking or a shipping label purchased on Etsy is required on all orders. For sellers in Canada, the UK, Australia and the EU, this applies to orders of 10 USD or more; lower-value orders only need to be marked as shipped by the ship-by date.

3. Keep your average above 4.8

The way to raise your rating is for the product to match the description exactly, for size and colour information to be clear, and to solve problems by message before they turn into reviews. For a compliant follow-up message and the right way to respond to a negative review, see our article on how to get reviews on Etsy.

4. Reach the minimum volume

The 5 orders and 300 USD threshold is often the hardest criterion for new shops. At this stage, rather than waiting for the badge, the best approach is to meet the other three criteria already; when the volume comes, the badge follows. To speed up sales you can apply the steps in ways to increase Etsy sales.

Notes for digital product and print on demand sellers

Digital products: only physical orders count towards the on-time shipping and tracking rate. If all your listings are digital, you do not need to add tracking; for the badge you focus on the message, rating and volume criteria. We explain setting up a digital product shop in our guide to selling digital products on Etsy.

Print on demand: in POD shops the criterion people most often trip over is on-time shipping, because the product is made after the order comes in. Set your processing time to cover your production partner's production time plus some buffer, and make sure the tracking number reaches the Etsy order without delay. In Printmeet, when an Etsy order is shipped the tracking number is passed to your Etsy order, and you follow the shipment status in the panel. Products are printed by production partners in the US and shipped directly to the buyer. If you are starting with t-shirts, read which system to use to sell t-shirts on Etsy, and for the Etsy integration see the Printmeet Etsy page.

What to do if you lost the badge

Because the badge is recalculated every month, losing it is not permanent. Use the Star Seller section of Shop Manager to find which criterion you fell short on: a late order, an unanswered first message, or a low review? Fix the source of the problem; for example, extend your processing time or turn on message notifications. As the three-month window moves on, old problems drop out of the calculation, and the badge comes back on the 1st of the month in which you meet the criteria again.

Frequently asked questions

How do you become a Star Seller on Etsy?

Over the last three months you need to reply to 95 percent of first messages within 24 hours, ship 95 percent of physical orders on time with tracking, have an average rating of at least 4.8, and make at least 5 orders and 300 USD in sales. Etsy checks this automatically on the 1st of every month; there is no application.

When does the Star Seller badge appear?

Etsy reviews eligibility on the 1st of every month using the last three months of data. If you meet the criteria, it can take up to 24 hours for the badge to appear. New shops are reviewed starting about 90 days after their first sale.

Does being a Star Seller improve Etsy ranking?

The badge itself does not directly affect ranking. However, customer service signals such as average rating, message response rate and case rate are taken into account in search ranking; meeting the Star Seller criteria improves these signals as well.

Can digital product sellers become Star Sellers?

Yes. Only physical orders count towards the on-time shipping and tracking rate; shops that sell only digital products can earn the badge through the message, rating and minimum volume criteria without adding tracking.
