The Etsy algorithm is the search system that decides which listings are shown when a buyer searches and in what order they appear. According to Etsy's own explanation, the process works in two phases: first, listings that match the searched words are found (query matching); then those listings are ranked by factors such as relevancy, listing quality and buyer engagement, the shop's customer experience, shipping and recency. On top of that, results are personalized based on the buyer's habits on Etsy. In short, a listing that doesn't match the right words never appears, and a listing that matches but doesn't get clicks or sales gradually falls behind.
Source note: This article is based on the "How Etsy Search Works" article in Etsy's Seller Handbook and on Etsy's search ranking disclosures. Etsy doesn't publish how much each factor weighs; what follows is not a secret formula but the framework Etsy has officially shared.
Phase 1: Query matching
When a buyer types "minimalist cat t-shirt" into the search bar, Etsy first pulls a list of listings that match that query. The main fields it looks at for matching are:
- Title: The field that most clearly says what the listing is. If the buyer's phrase appears in the title, the match gets stronger.
- Tags: You can add 13 tags to each listing, and Etsy recommends using all of them. Each tag is a separate chance to match a search.
- Category and attributes: Attributes such as color, material and style work like tags. If you've selected an attribute, you don't need to repeat the same information in your tags; you can use that tag slot for another phrase.
- Description, first photo and reviews: Etsy says it looks at the listing as a whole. The description and images also help the listing match the right buyer.
The lesson of this phase is simple: if the words buyers actually type aren't in your listing, you never make it to the ranking phase. For keyword research and writing tags, see our guide to Etsy SEO.
Phase 2: Ranking factors
When matching listings are ranked, these are the main factors Etsy has disclosed.
- Relevancy: How closely do your title, tags, description, category and attributes match the buyer's query? According to Etsy, if a keyword exactly matches the query, the listing may be seen as more relevant and may rank higher.
- Listing engagement: When buyers see the listing, do they click, add it to favorites and buy? Etsy looks at how well a listing converts from views to purchases to understand whether buyers are interested in it. Good engagement moves a listing up in search.
- Customer and market experience: When measuring shop quality, Etsy looks at product reviews, the shop's rating, whether messages are answered on time, whether orders ship on time, the case rate and whether Etsy policies have been violated. Having a completed About section and shop policies such as returns also counts. Recent cases and intellectual property infringements can lead to listings being placed lower.
- Listing and shop quality: A complete shop profile (such as a shop photo), enough high-quality images in the listing and a defined return policy give buyers confidence; Etsy takes these into account as well.
- Shipping: Shipping price and method affect ranking. Offering free or low-cost shipping to buyers in the US and lower shipping prices to buyers in your own country can improve a listing's rank. For details, see Etsy shipping settings.
- Recency: A newly created listing gets a small, temporary boost in search so Etsy can learn how buyers react to it. Renewed listings get a similar but smaller boost. According to Etsy, this effect lasts from a few hours to a few days, depending on how often that item is searched for.
Personalization: not everyone sees the same results
On top of ranking, Etsy adds a technology it calls "Context Specific Ranking". Based on what it learns from buyers' habits across Etsy, this system tries to show each buyer the listings they are more likely to purchase. So seeing your listing in a certain position when you search on your own phone doesn't mean another buyer sees the same order. Measuring your ranking by "searching it yourself" can be misleading.
Ads are not the same as organic ranking
With Etsy Ads you can show your listings in ad placements within search results. But ads are not a shortcut that replaces the organic ranking described above; an advertised listing still needs to get clicks and sales. We explain how ads work on Etsy in our Etsy Ads guide.
Preparing listings for the algorithm: 7 practical steps
- Keep the title short and clear. According to Etsy's current title guidance, the title should first say what the item is, important traits such as color, material and size should come near the start, and the title should ideally be under 15 words. Move subjective words like "perfect" or "beautiful" to the description, avoid repeating words, and don't add price, shipping or sale information to the title.
- Use all 13 tags. Choose phrases buyers would type instead of single words, and don't repeat information already in the title or attributes.
- Fill in attributes completely. Fields such as color, style and size work like extra tags; select every relevant option.
- Choose a first photo that earns the click. What stops buyers in search results is the first image. For print on demand products, a realistic mockup does this job; see what is a mockup.
- Write the description for the buyer. Describe the product in the first sentence, then answer questions about size, material and care. See how to write an Etsy product description.
- Complete your shop profile and policies. A shop photo, an About section and a return policy both build buyer trust and feed into Etsy's shop evaluation. For a checklist, see Etsy shop optimization.
- Protect the customer experience. Reply to messages quickly, ship orders within the time you state, and stay away from designs that include brands or characters. Intellectual property complaints can lower your ranking; see copyright and trademark infringement on Etsy.
Use Etsy's search visibility page
Inside Shop Manager, Etsy offers sellers a search visibility page that shows how their listings appear in search. On this page you can see improvement suggestions for your listings and access Etsy's optional AI-powered title suggestion tool. The tool suggests new titles using your current title, first photo and description. Don't accept a suggestion blindly; check whether it keeps the phrase buyers actually search for.
Be careful with common claims
Online you'll find many claims about the Etsy algorithm, such as a "secret update", an "exact character limit" or "renew your listings every day". The framework Etsy has shared is simpler: match the right words, get buyers to click and buy, keep your shop trustworthy and set reasonable shipping. The boost from renewing is small and temporary; constantly renewing a listing that gets no engagement is not a lasting fix. Before applying a claim, check whether it has a counterpart in Etsy's Seller Handbook.
Where does Printmeet fit in?
Printmeet helps print on demand sellers prepare for the first two steps of the algorithm (the right words and an image that earns the click): AI design generation and background removal, automatic mockups, Etsy-ready SEO title and tag suggestions, and sending products directly to your shop through the Etsy integration. Order and shipment tracking happen in the same panel. Production is handled by production partners in the US. You can see the steps of the process on the how it works page. If you haven't made your first sale yet, the steps to your first Etsy sale article is a good place to start.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Etsy algorithm work?
It works in two phases. First, listings that match the words the buyer searched for are found by looking at titles, tags, categories and attributes. Then those listings are ranked by factors such as relevancy, listing engagement, the shop's customer experience, shipping and recency, and personalized for the buyer.
Does renewing a listing on Etsy improve its ranking?
According to Etsy, renewed listings get a small, temporary boost; it is smaller than the one given to new listings and lasts between a few hours and a few days. Lasting rankings come from engagement and sales.
Why isn't my Etsy listing showing up in search?
The most common reason is that the phrases buyers type aren't in the title, tags or attributes. Other reasons are low engagement, incomplete shop information, high shipping prices and policy violations. The search visibility page in Shop Manager shows improvement suggestions.
Does the Etsy algorithm give new shops a chance?
Newly created listings get a temporary boost in search so Etsy can learn how buyers react. To make good use of this window, have the title, tags and first photo ready before you publish the listing.
