To sell printables on Etsy, you prepare your design as a file the buyer can print at home or at a print shop (usually PDF, JPG or PNG), choose Digital files as the item type when you create the listing, and upload the files to the listing. According to the Etsy Help Center, you can upload up to 5 files to a digital listing, and each file can be up to 20 MB. Once payment is confirmed, the buyer gets access to the files; there is no shipping, stock or production. The hard part of printables is preparing the file correctly and fitting every size the buyer may need into that 5-file limit.

What are printables, and which types sell on Etsy?
A printable is a digital product that the buyer prints themselves after purchase. The buyer does not expect a physical package; they download the file and print it on their own printer or at a copy or print shop. The most common printable types on Etsy are:
- Wall art: Posters, illustrations, typography, city maps, nursery sets.
- Planners: Daily, weekly, budget, meal and habit tracker pages.
- Event products: Invitations, birthday decorations, labels and place cards.
- Educational materials: Worksheets, colouring pages, activity cards.
- Cards and labels: Greeting cards, gift tags, kitchen jar labels.
Printables are a subtype of digital products. We cover other digital products such as templates, fonts, digital paper or e-books, and the general flow of digital listings, in selling digital products on Etsy, and platforms outside Etsy in our selling digital products guide. This article focuses only on printable files.
Niche first: what kind of printables will you sell?
The printables category is crowded; on a broad search such as "motivational poster" you compete with thousands of listings. Speaking to a narrower audience makes things easier: "shift planner for nurses", "minimalist nursery animal posters" or "camping-themed colouring pages for kids". We explain step by step how to find areas with demand but relatively few listings in how to find an Etsy niche.
How to prepare a printable file
The buyer cannot see the product's quality until they print the file. That is why the technical settings must be right from the start:
- Resolution: The generally accepted value for printing is 300 DPI. You get the pixel size by multiplying the size in inches by 300: an 8×10 inch print needs 2400×3000 pixels.
- File format: JPG is common for wall art. For multi-page planners and worksheets, PDF is more practical, because the pages come in order in a single file. If you need a transparent background (labels, stickers), use PNG.
- Paper standard: A4 (210×297 mm) is used in Turkey and Europe, Letter (8.5×11 inches) in the USA. Since most Etsy buyers are abroad, offering planners in both sizes reduces returns and questions.
- Margins: Home printers may not be able to print to the very edge of the page. Keep text and important elements away from the edges.
- Colour: The colour seen on screen may not exactly match the colour on paper. Mention this with a short note in the listing description.

Size packs for wall art: every size in 5 files
According to the Etsy Help Center, variations cannot be offered on digital listings; the buyer receives all the files you upload to the listing. That is why wall art sellers, instead of splitting different frame sizes into separate listings, put files prepared by aspect ratio into the same listing. Every size with the same ratio can be printed by scaling down the largest file of that ratio. The ratios and the recommended largest file at 300 DPI:
- 2:3 ratio (4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 inches): 24×36 inches → 7200×10800 pixels
- 3:4 ratio (6×8, 9×12, 12×16, 18×24 inches): 18×24 inches → 5400×7200 pixels
- 4:5 ratio (8×10, 16×20 inches): 16×20 inches → 4800×6000 pixels
- 11×14 inches (a separate ratio): 3300×4200 pixels
- ISO / A series (A5, A4, A3, A2, A1): A1 → 7016×9933 pixels
These five files fit Etsy's 5-file limit exactly. At large sizes the file may exceed 20 MB; adjust the JPG compression while checking quality, and check each file's size before uploading. Choose file names carefully too: according to Etsy, buyers see the file names you upload exactly as they are, and a file name cannot be changed after uploading. Descriptive names such as "poster-2x3-ratio-24x36.jpg" make it easier for the buyer to find the right file.
A printable listing on Etsy, step by step
- Create the listing: Open a new listing in Shop Manager and select Digital files for the "What type of item is it?" question.
- Upload the files: Ready-made files (instant download) are uploaded when you create the listing. The file types Etsy supports include PDF, JPG, PNG and ZIP.
- Prepare the images: Use mockups that show the printable in a frame, on a wall or on a desk. The first image should explain what the product is even at a small size. For image rules, see Etsy product photos and what is a mockup.
- Write a "no physical item will be shipped" note: The most common complaint is a buyer expecting a framed poster. In the first line of the description, state that this is a digital file, that no frame is included and which sizes the files contain (how to write an Etsy product description).
- Title and tags: Combine phrases such as "printable", "digital download" and "instant download" with words that describe the product, for example "printable kitchen wall art". We explain how to spread your 13 tags in how to write Etsy tags.
- State the usage rights: Say clearly whether the file is for personal use and whether the buyer may print and sell it.
After purchase, the buyer can reach the files from the Purchases page on Etsy. Etsy notes that for orders paid by card or PayPal, it may take a few minutes for the download link to arrive. Buyers not finding the file is a common problem; adding the download step to the description in one sentence cuts down on messages.
Copyright and AI rules
The biggest risk with printables is copyright and trademark infringement. A character from a series, a famous quote, a brand's logo or an illustration you have not licensed can get the listing removed and put your shop at risk. Details: copyright and trademark infringement on Etsy.
If you produce designs with AI, under Etsy's Creativity Standards these items can be sold as items "designed by a seller", but you must state in the listing description that the item was created using AI. Etsy also does not allow AI prompt bundles to be sold on their own. We explain the AI design process for Etsy in AI Etsy product design.
Printable or print on demand?
Both start with the same design but appeal to different buyers. A printable buyer wants to print the file themselves and pays a lower price. A print on demand buyer wants to see the design as a finished product such as a t-shirt, mug or poster at their door. Many sellers offer the same design both ways. With Printmeet you can create your design with AI, remove its background, see it as a mockup on the product, prepare the title and tags and send it to Etsy as a physical product. Physical products are printed after an order by our production partners in the USA. For the full process, see how Printmeet works.
Frequently asked questions
What do you need to sell printables on Etsy?
An Etsy shop, a print-ready file (PDF, JPG or PNG) and images that show the product are enough. When creating the listing you choose "Digital files" as the item type and upload the files to the listing; no shipping or stock is needed.
What DPI should a printable file be?
The generally accepted value for printing is 300 DPI. The pixel size needed is found by multiplying the print size in inches by 300; for example, 2400×3000 pixels for 8×10 inches.
How many files can you upload to a digital listing on Etsy?
According to the Etsy Help Center, you can upload up to 5 files to a digital listing, and each file can be up to 20 MB. Since variations cannot be offered on digital listings, different sizes are usually placed in the same listing as separate files by aspect ratio.
Can AI-made printables be sold on Etsy?
Yes. Etsy allows designs that sellers generate in AI tools from their own prompts to be sold, but requires the listing description to state that the item was created using AI. Copyright and trademark rules also apply to AI designs.
