The core rules for Etsy product photos are these: Etsy recommends that listing photos be at least 2000 pixels in both width and height. You can add 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing. The first photo should be horizontal or square, because the small image (thumbnail) shown in search results is cropped from the centre of that photo. Images must also accurately show the item the buyer will receive. There is one important detail for print on demand sellers: under Etsy's image rules, you may use a mockup instead of a real photo for items whose design is printed by a production partner.

Source note: The Etsy rules and technical values in this article are based on the Etsy Help Center articles "Requirements and Best Practices for Images in Your Etsy Shop", "How to Add Listing Videos", "How to Add a Text Alternative to Your Listing Images" and "How to Edit Your Listing Photos", Etsy's "Listing Image Requirements" policy page and the Seller Handbook article on variation photos.

Why do product photos matter so much on Etsy?

When shopping online, buyers cannot touch the item, feel the fabric or turn the mug in their hands. They get most of their information about the product from images. On Etsy this effect shows up in two stages. First, only a small version of your first photo appears in search results; that small image decides whether you get the click. Then, on the listing page, the full set of photos answers the buyer's questions: How big is it, what does the colour really look like, where does the print sit, how will it look on me?

According to Etsy, adding more images to a listing may increase your conversion rate, because each one gives buyers more information about the item. Clicks and purchases are also linked to how a listing performs in search (details: how the Etsy algorithm works). Titles and tags bring buyers to your listing; photos turn them into customers.

Etsy photo size and technical rules

According to the image guide in the Etsy Help Center, the key technical values are:

  • Recommended size: At least 2000 pixels in width and height. Large images let buyers zoom in to see details.
  • Minimum for the first photo: According to Etsy, the first listing photo should be at least 635 pixels in width and height. Smaller images may show up lower in search.
  • File type: JPG, PNG and GIF are supported. Etsy recommends a resolution of 72 PPI.
  • File size: Etsy notes that files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection. Compressing images without losing quality is a good habit.
  • Number: Up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing.
  • Video: Listing videos are up to 15 seconds long and play without sound. So the picture itself has to explain the product.

Etsy may update these values from time to time; follow the prompts Etsy shows you when you create a listing.

The first photo and the thumbnail

Your first photo is your shop window. Etsy recommends that the first photo be horizontal or square. That way the focal point in the centre of the photo also appears in the cropped thumbnail shown on different pages. In a vertical photo, the top or bottom of the product may be cut off in the thumbnail.

  • Place the product in the centre of the frame and leave some space around the edges so the crop does not cut your design.
  • Test at a small size: Shrink the image right down on screen. Is the design still readable and the product still clear? The view in search results is close to this.
  • Adjust the thumbnail: Etsy lets you crop photos and adjust the thumbnail after uploading them. Following Etsy's advice, crop first and then adjust the thumbnail; cropping can change how the thumbnail looks.
  • Simple background: Choose an uncluttered background so the product stands out in the first image. Save detailed scenes for later photos.

Can print on demand sellers use mockups?

This is the question every POD seller on Etsy asks, and the answer is written in Etsy's rules. According to Etsy's "Listing Image Requirements" page, sellers must use their own photos showing the actual item that will be sent to the buyer. Stock photos and computer renderings are generally not allowed, but there are two exceptions:

  • Items made with a production partner: If you create an original design and have a production partner print it onto an item such as a t-shirt or mug, you may use a stock photo mockup to show the end product the buyer will receive. The print on demand model falls under this.
  • Personalized items: The first image must show a finished, personalized item similar to what the buyer will receive. A photo of the blank product or a mockup with placeholder text such as "Your Text Here" cannot be used as the first image. Computer-generated mockups can be used in additional images to show personalization options.

So mockups are allowed, but the accuracy requirement always applies. The colour, print size and placement in the mockup must match the item you ship. As Etsy also stresses, accurately showing the condition, quality and quantity of your items is the basis of buyer trust. We explain what a mockup is and its types in what is a mockup, and the steps to make one in how to make a mockup. Also check the commercial-use licence of templates you download; using images without a licence can lead to intellectual property complaints (see copyright and trademark infringement on Etsy).

A photo set that sells: an 8-image plan

You do not have to fill all 20 photo slots, but every image should answer a question. An example set for a t-shirt or sweatshirt:

  1. Main image: A flat lay view on a simple background where the design reads clearly.
  2. On a model: Shows the fit and how large the design is on the body.
  3. Lifestyle scene: A setting where the product is used; the buyer imagines themselves in that scene.
  4. Close-up: Shows the print detail and how readable the text is.
  5. Colour options: All the colours you offer, in one image or separately.
  6. Size chart: Garment measurements; reduces returns and questions.
  7. Back or second print area: If there is one.
  8. Care or usage information: Short details such as washing instructions and product features.

If you sell mugs, posters or phone cases, apply the same logic: the first image should show the product clearly, and the following ones should explain scale, use, detail and options. It also matters that the photo set matches the listing description; every feature you mention in the description should also be visible in the images (see how to write an Etsy product description).

Photos for variations and alt text

In listings with variations such as size and colour, buyers want to see what their chosen option looks like. Etsy's Seller Handbook recommends showing variations with photos, so buyers can see the image of the colour they select directly. Selling a multi-colour product with a single-colour mockup is the most common reason for "the colour I got doesn't look like the photo" complaints.

You can also add alternative text (alt text) to your photos. Alt text describes what an image shows to buyers who cannot see it. In Shop Manager, open the listing from the Listings section, select the photo and write a description in the Alt text field. According to Etsy, if you do not add alt text, Etsy automatically adds a description generated with AI; alt text you have written is not changed. Describe the image briefly and accurately, for example: "Camping-themed design in white handwriting on a black t-shirt, front view."

The most common Etsy photo mistakes

  • Vertical first photo: The product gets cut off in the thumbnail.
  • Colours that are not real: Heavy filters and saturation bring clicks, but come back as bad reviews.
  • Wrong print size: If a design that covers the chest in the mockup is printed small in reality, the buyer is disappointed.
  • Single-image listing: Leaves the buyer's questions unanswered.
  • Inconsistent shop look: Different lighting and backgrounds in every listing make the shop look messy. For a consistent visual style, see creating professional mockups and mockup mistakes.

Photos also shape the overall impression of the shop; we explain how the banner, icon and listing images work together in Etsy shop optimization.

Mockups and listing images with Printmeet

In print on demand, the product is not made until you make a sale, so the photo set mostly consists of mockups. With Printmeet you can create your design with AI, remove its background and see it as a mockup on the product. You can then prepare the title and tags and send the product to Etsy from the same panel. After an order, products are printed by our production partners in the USA. For the full process, see how Printmeet works.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Etsy product photos be?

Etsy recommends that listing photos be at least 2000 pixels in width and height. The first photo should be at least 635 pixels and preferably horizontal or square. JPG, PNG or GIF can be used as the file type.

How many photos can you add to an Etsy listing?

You can add up to 20 photos and 2 videos to each listing. Videos are up to 15 seconds long and play without sound.

Is using mockups against Etsy's rules?

No, as long as you meet the conditions. Under Etsy's image rules, you may use mockups to show the end product for items where a production partner prints your original design. For personalized items, the first image must be a finished, personalized example, not a blank product or a mockup with placeholder text.

Why should the first Etsy photo be horizontal or square?

Etsy shows a small image cropped from the centre of the first photo in search results and on the shop page. In a horizontal or square photo, the product's focal point stays in this cropped image.
