To sell t-shirts on Etsy, the most common system is print on demand: you connect your Etsy shop to a POD platform, upload your design and publish the listing, and when an order comes in the t-shirt is printed by a production partner and shipped directly to the buyer. You hold no inventory and buy no printing equipment. If you sell from Turkey, you can use Printmeet to handle design, mockups, uploading to Etsy and order tracking in a Turkish-language panel; if you prefer international platforms, you can use Printful or Printify. All three connect to Etsy directly. Etsy allows this model, provided the design is yours and you disclose your production partner in your shop.
Transparency note: This article was written by the Printmeet team. Information about other platforms comes from their own help pages; we recommend testing each platform with your own product before deciding.
3 ways to sell t-shirts on Etsy
When you sell t-shirts on Etsy, the "system" question is really a question of who does the production. There are three options:
- Printing yourself: The printing machine, blank t-shirt stock and packing are all on you. You have full control, but the start-up cost is high, and from Turkey you would have to ship every order to a US buyer internationally.
- Stocked production (bulk printing at a workshop): You have your designs printed in bulk and keep them in storage. Unit costs may drop, but you have to predict in advance which design, size and colour will sell; unsold stock is a loss.
- Print on demand: The t-shirt is printed only when an order comes in. You pay production and shipping per order and can test hundreds of designs without inventory risk. When production happens in a country close to the buyer, delivery time is shorter too.
For someone starting out and selling from Turkey, print on demand is the lowest-risk route. We explain step by step how the model works in how to start print on demand.
Which print on demand system? A view from Turkey
Many POD platforms work directly with Etsy. These are the three that t-shirt sellers in Turkey compare most often:
- Printmeet: Turkish-language interface. AI design generation, background removal, automatic mockups, English Etsy titles and tags, publishing products to Etsy and order/shipment tracking in the same panel. T-shirts are printed by production partners in the US; since a large share of Etsy buyers are in the US, the shipping route is shorter.
- Printful: Prints products mainly in its own facilities; consistent quality and a wide catalogue are its strengths. The interface and support are in English.
- Printify: Works with a network of partner print providers; you can optimise cost by choosing the same t-shirt from different providers. Quality and turnaround depend on the provider you pick.
Whichever you choose, check three things: how close production is to your buyer, whether the Etsy connection transfers orders and tracking numbers automatically, and how many separate tools your design, mockup and listing work is spread across. Step by step: getting started selling t-shirts on Etsy
1. Open your Etsy shop
Your shop name, payment account and identity verification are completed at this stage. Details: how to open an Etsy shop.
2. Choose a niche
"Funny t-shirts" is too broad; a specific audience such as "funny t-shirts for nurses" or "minimalist t-shirts for campers" makes it easier to stand out in search. We explain how in how to find an Etsy niche.
3. Prepare a print-ready design
For t-shirt printing, prepare the design as a PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI at print size; low-resolution images come out blurry in print. Thin lines and very small text can get lost on fabric. Check that the same design is readable on both dark and light t-shirts. If you generate designs with AI, use the checklist in AI t-shirt design.
4. Rule out copyright and trademark risk
In the t-shirt category, the most common reason shops get closed is designs that contain someone else's characters, logos, slogans or celebrity names. Etsy requires that products sold through POD are your original design (or the buyer's personalisation). We have collected the risky design types in Etsy copyright and trademark infringement.
5. Prepare the mockups and the listing
Because the buyer purchases without seeing the t-shirt, the mockup is the most important part of the listing: show the design in different colours and in a realistic scene. See how to make a t-shirt mockup. Use your buyers' search language in titles and tags; most Etsy buyers search in English. You will find how to fill all 13 tags in how to write Etsy tags.
6. Set up size and colour variations
Etsy recommends adding attributes such as size and colour as separate variations rather than combining them into one. If larger sizes cost more to produce, you can vary the price by variation. Etsy lets you set unique prices and quantities for up to 400 variation combinations. Add a size chart that matches your production partner's fit to the description; it is the easiest way to prevent "it ran small" complaints.
7. Define your shipping profile and production partner
Etsy asks sellers who work with a production partner to disclose it and to give accurate information about where the item ships from. If production happens in the US, that is also where it ships from. Enter a processing time that matches real production time. See Etsy shipping settings for the steps.
8. Set your price based on profit
Etsy charges a listing fee of 0.20 USD per listing; when an item sells it takes a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and a separate payment processing fee. When you set the price, calculate these deductions, the production and shipping cost and your target profit together. For the order of the calculation see Etsy fees and profit calculation.

5 common mistakes of t-shirt sellers on Etsy
- Too broad a niche: Designs that appeal to everyone get lost among thousands of similar listings.
- Unrealistic processing time: A time shorter than production leads to late delivery and low reviews.
- No size chart: Sizing problems are among the top causes of return requests and negative reviews.
- Mockup differs from the product: The colour and print size in the mockup must match the printed product.
- Titles and tags not in the buyer's language: Most buyers are abroad and search in English.
Frequently asked questions
Which system can I use to sell t-shirts on Etsy?
To sell without inventory you use a print on demand system. From Turkey, Printmeet lets you handle design, mockups, uploading to Etsy and order tracking together in a Turkish-language panel; if you prefer an international platform, Printful or Printify connect to Etsy directly. When an order comes in, the t-shirt is printed by the production partner and shipped to the buyer.
Do I need inventory to sell t-shirts on Etsy?
No. In the print on demand model the t-shirt is printed only when an order comes in; you pay production and shipping per order. You only need stock if you choose to print yourself or have bulk production done.
How much does it cost to sell t-shirts on Etsy?
Etsy charges a 0.20 USD listing fee per listing, a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the item and shipping amount when it sells, and a separate payment processing fee. With print on demand, production and shipping per order are added to these; there is no inventory cost at the start.
Can I sell t-shirts with characters or brands on Etsy?
Not without permission from the rights holder. Designs containing someone else's characters, logos or brand names count as intellectual property infringement and can lead to the listing being removed and, if repeated, the shop being closed. Work with original designs.
