Shipping settings on Etsy aren't just about "how much should I charge for shipping." Processing time, ships-from location, and your free shipping choice directly affect both your search ranking and bad reviews caused by late delivery. If you work with print on demand, some of these settings work differently than you might expect.
What is a shipping profile?
A shipping profile is a set of shipping rules that applies to a group of products: where they ship from, processing time, and which countries they ship to at what price. You can assign the same profile to many products; a change applies to all of them.
Tip: Create separate profiles by product type (e.g., "T-shirt – US production," "Sweatshirt – US production," "Mug"). Different products have different production and shipping times.
"Ships from" for POD products
In print on demand, the product ships not from your home but from the print provider's facility. Set the origin based on where the product is actually shipped from. The estimated delivery date shown to buyers is calculated from this information; if it's entered incorrectly, the estimates will be wrong too.
Etsy requires sellers who outsource production to disclose their production partner in their shop settings. Skipping this can cause problems during a shop review.
Processing time
- Processing time = the time from when an order comes in until it's handed to the carrier.
- In POD, this should be the provider's production time + a small buffer. An unrealistically short time leads to late deliveries and low ratings.
- Production times get longer during the busy season (November–December); update your profile at the start of the season. See the Etsy Q4 sales calendar.
Free shipping or paid shipping?
US buyers are used to free shipping, and Etsy notes that it may prioritize shops offering free shipping in the US above a certain order amount in search.
A practical approach: build the shipping cost into the product price and show free shipping. When calculating the price, consider shipping, production, and Etsy fees together: Etsy fees and profit calculation.
Tracking numbers
- Enter a tracking number for every order. Etsy uses it to evaluate payment hold periods and shop reliability; your funds are released faster. See withdrawing money from Etsy.
- If orders go to the provider through Printmeet, check that the shipment tracking information is recorded on the Etsy order.
Checklist
- Separate shipping profiles by product type
- Ships-from location = the provider's facility
- Processing time = production time + buffer
- Production partner disclosed in shop settings
- Free shipping for the US (cost built into the price)
- A tracking number for every order
Frequently asked questions
I sell from Turkey but the product ships from the US. Is that a problem?
No; it's a common model in POD. What matters is entering the ships-from location and production partner information correctly.
What happens if a delivery is late?
The buyer can open an order issue and leave a low rating; repeated late deliveries drag down your shop metrics. Keeping your processing time realistic is the best safeguard.
