The lowest-risk way to sell sweatshirts and hoodies on Etsy is the print on demand model: you prepare your design and list the product in your Etsy shop through a POD platform; when an order comes in, the sweatshirt is printed by a production partner and shipped directly to the buyer. You hold no inventory. It differs from t-shirts in three ways: sales concentrate in the fall and winter months, product cost and selling price are higher, and the print area changes with the product type (kangaroo pocket, hood). Etsy allows this model; the conditions are that the design is yours and that you disclose your production partner in your shop.
Sweatshirt, hoodie and zip-up hoodie: what's the difference?
Etsy buyers search for these products in English and under different names; stating correctly in the title what you sell is the first condition for showing up in the right searches.
- Sweatshirt (crewneck sweatshirt): No hood, round neck. The whole front is suitable for printing; it's the easiest product for a large front print and a chest logo.
- Hoodie (pullover hoodie): Hooded, usually with a kangaroo pocket on the front. The pocket can fall on the lower part of a large front print; don't put important text at the bottom edge of the design.
- Zip-up hoodie: Because the front is split in two by the zipper, a chest logo and a back print are preferred over a large front print.
Which products are offered with which print areas varies from platform to platform; check the print area of the product you choose before opening the listing.
Why are sweatshirts and hoodies planned differently from t-shirts?
- Season: In the Northern Hemisphere, demand rises as the weather gets colder; Halloween, Thanksgiving and the holiday gift season are the main season for these products. For buyers in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed.
- Price: The fabric is thicker, and production and shipping costs are higher than for t-shirts. So don't derive the price from your t-shirt price; calculate the cost separately.
- Gift intent: Sweatshirts and hoodies are often bought as gifts. Personalization (name, year, city) and matching family/couple sets work well for these products.
- Fit expectations: Many buyers want an oversized look and choose one size up for it. The size chart becomes even more critical than for t-shirts.
Step by step: start selling sweatshirts and hoodies on Etsy
1. Choose your niche and season together
Instead of "funny sweatshirt", choose an audience and a period, such as "Halloween sweatshirt for teachers" or "winter hoodie for dog owners". We explain when you need to go live in our Etsy seasonal sales calendar and, for the last quarter of the year, in the Etsy Q4 holiday and Black Friday sales calendar. For how to find an audience, see our guide on how to find an Etsy niche.
2. Design for the print area
Prepare the design as a PNG with a transparent background, in high resolution at print size. Very thin lines and small text can get lost on thick fabric; simple, legible compositions give better results. Dark sweatshirts are very popular in this category, so check that the design is also readable on a dark background. A detailed checklist is in our print on demand design tips and AI t-shirt design articles.
3. Rule out copyright and trademark risk
Team logos, TV and movie characters or famous slogans look tempting, especially in seasonal designs, but they can get your shop closed. We've collected what carries risk in our article on copyright and trademark infringement on Etsy.
4. Make realistic mockups
The buyer can't see the thickness of the fabric or the fit; the images tell them. Show the product in a few colors, worn and on a plain background, and don't misrepresent the actual size of the print. If the hood and pocket are visible, the position of the print relative to the pocket is visible too. The mockup logic is the same as for t-shirts: how to make a t-shirt mockup.
5. Use the product name correctly in titles and tags
Most buyers search in English. If the product has no hood, write "crewneck sweatshirt" near the start of the title; if it has a hood, write "hoodie". If you don't sell both in the same listing, don't mix them in the title. Divide the remaining tags among audience, theme and gift intent. We explain how to fill your 13 tags in how to write Etsy tags.
6. Set up size, color and the size chart
On Etsy, you can add variations for up to three attributes in a listing; set up size and color as separate variations. If larger sizes cost more, you can vary the price by size; Etsy lets you set separate prices and quantities for up to 400 combinations. Add a size chart matching your production partner's measurements to the description, and suggest one size up to buyers who want an oversized look.
7. Set the price based on cost
Calculate the production and shipping cost, Etsy's listing, transaction and payment processing fees and your target profit together; also leave room for discounts and ads. For the order of the calculation, see our print on demand pricing and Etsy fees and profit calculation articles.
8. Set up your production partner and shipping
Etsy asks sellers who work with a production partner to disclose this in the relevant listings and to show correctly where the item ships from. Enter the processing time based on the real production time; details in our Etsy shipping settings guide.
T-shirt, sweatshirt and hoodie in one listing
Instead of showing three separate listings to a buyer who wants the same design on three different products, you can offer the options in a single listing. This way the listing's reviews and sales accumulate in one place. There are two things to watch: product × size × color combinations grow quickly, and too many options both tire the buyer and can lead to the listing being rejected; also, if the products are printed by different manufacturers, orders placed together may ship separately. State this in the description.
Selling sweatshirts and hoodies with Printmeet
- Connect your Etsy shop: Grant access with the "Connect to Etsy" button in the panel.
- Choose the product: On the "Design and Add Product > Physical Product" screen, choose the sweatshirt or hoodie and up to 10 colors. Some products can be printed on the front and back; back printing costs extra.
- Design: Generate the design with AI from a single sentence or upload your own PNG file; remove the background if needed.
- Send the listing: Mockups are created automatically and English title and tag suggestions are prepared; you set the price and send the product to Etsy. With the bundle product feature, you can offer a t-shirt, sweatshirt and hoodie in one listing.
When an order comes in, the product is printed by our production partners in the US and shipped to the buyer, and the tracking number is passed to your Etsy order. For details, see the Printmeet Etsy and Printmeet AI pages. We cover the same flow for t-shirts in selling t-shirts on Etsy.
5 common mistakes
- Being late for the season: A listing that goes live at peak demand doesn't get the time it needs to rise in search.
- Ignoring the pocket: On a hoodie, the lower part of the design falls on the pocket.
- Copying the t-shirt price: The higher cost turns a copied price into a loss.
- Not adding a size chart: If fit expectations aren't met, return requests and low ratings follow.
- Mixing up product names: Writing "hoodie" on a product without a hood means visitors from the wrong searches and unhappy buyers.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to hold inventory to sell sweatshirts on Etsy?
No. In the print on demand model, the sweatshirt is printed only when an order comes in and is shipped directly to the buyer by the production partner. You manage the design, the listing and customer communication.
When do sweatshirts and hoodies sell best?
In the Northern Hemisphere, in the fall and winter months; especially during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday and the holiday gift season. Listings need to go live before demand rises, at the end of summer.
Where should the print go on a hoodie?
On a hoodie with a kangaroo pocket, place a large front print relative to the top of the pocket, or use a chest logo and a back print. On a zip-up hoodie, the front is split in two, so chest and back prints are more suitable.
Can I sell a t-shirt, sweatshirt and hoodie in the same listing?
Yes, you can sell them in one listing by offering the product as a variation. Keep the number of combinations reasonable, and state in the description that items may ship separately if they are printed by different manufacturers.
