To add variations on Etsy, open the listing, click Add variation in the Item options section, choose an attribute such as "Size" or "Color" from the list your category offers, enter the options and toggle whether price, quantity, processing profile or SKU should vary by option; then save with Done. According to Etsy's help page, a listing can use up to 3 variation types, and if price, quantity or SKU varies by option, you can set up to 400 option combinations. This guide covers the steps, the limits, linking photos and how to structure sizes and colors for print on demand products.

What is a variation on Etsy?

Variations are options that let the buyer choose within the same listing. Instead of opening a separate listing for every size and color of a t-shirt, you offer "Size: S, M, L, XL" and "Color: White, Black, Navy" in one listing. The buyer picks from these menus, and the order arrives with the combination they selected.

The benefit of keeping everything in one listing is clear: reviews, favorites and sales accumulate on a single listing; you don't create many duplicate listings competing with each other in search; and you pay the listing fee once. For the general steps of listing a product, see the how to sell on Etsy guide.

Adding variations step by step

  1. Open the listing: Go to the listings page in Shop Manager and select the listing you want to edit (the same section is there when you create a new listing).
  2. Scroll to Item options: Click the Add variation button.
  3. Choose the variation type: The list depends on the listing's category. In clothing, size and color options are usually available. If there is no suitable type in the list, you can create your own variation.
  4. Enter the options: Add sizes and colors one by one. Keep the order buyers expect (S → M → L → XL, for example).
  5. Decide what varies: Turn the "varies by option" toggles on or off for price, quantity, processing profile and SKU.
  6. Save: Apply the variations with Done, then publish or update the listing.

Screen labels may differ depending on the language of your Etsy interface.

Predefined or custom variations?

Etsy offers two kinds of variations:

  • Predefined (category-specific) variations: Chosen from the list Etsy provides for your category. Standard attributes such as size and color are of this kind.
  • Custom variations: You name them yourself with "Create your own" (e.g. "Print location" or "Text color").

The key difference: according to Etsy, custom variations can't be used in Etsy's search filters. When a buyer selects a "black" or "XL" filter in search, predefined color and size options help you; a heading you invented does not. So always use the predefined types for size and color, and create a custom variation only for attributes that have no match in the list. For more on filters and search, see the Etsy SEO guide.

Variation limits

The limits stated on Etsy's help page are:

  • Variation types: Up to 3 attributes per listing (e.g. size, color and a third attribute).
  • 1–2 variation types: Up to 4,900 option combinations.
  • 3 variation types: Up to 2,500 option combinations.
  • If price, quantity or SKU varies by option: Up to 400 option combinations.
  • Digital listings: Digital (downloadable) listings don't support variations.

The number of combinations is the product of the option counts. For example, 6 sizes × 10 colors = 60 combinations, far below the 400 limit. But if you offer three product types (t-shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie) in the same listing, each with 6 sizes and 10 colors, you reach 3 × 6 × 10 = 180 combinations. Calculate the product before adding options. If you sell digital products, you need to open different sizes or bundles as separate listings (see selling digital products on Etsy).

Setting price, quantity and SKU by variation

With print on demand products, the production cost often changes by size; larger sizes are usually more expensive. So it makes sense to vary the price at least by size. If you give all sizes one price, your profit shrinks on large sizes or you stay needlessly expensive on small ones. We explain cost and profit calculation in detail in the print on demand pricing article.

  • Price: You can enter a separate price for each combination. In search results and on the listing page, the buyer sees the price range before choosing; a very wide range can be confusing.
  • Quantity: For POD sellers who don't hold stock, quantity is kept high so the product doesn't appear "sold out". If a particular color temporarily can't be produced, turning off that combination is better than showing the buyer an option you can't fulfill.
  • SKU: Giving each combination its own SKU makes it possible to match automatically which product, size and color an order should be produced with. If you work with an integration, don't change SKUs manually; the matching may break.
  • Processing profile: If some options take longer to prepare, you can vary the processing time by option. For processing and shipping settings, see the Etsy shipping settings guide.

Linking photos to variations

For visible attributes such as color, Etsy lets you link photos to options ("Link photos to this variation"). Once linked, when the buyer selects "Black", the photo of the black product opens in the listing. According to Etsy, this feature can be used for up to 20 options.

If you offer color options, preparing a separate mockup for each color is the easiest way to prevent the buyer from saying "it looked different from the photo". For more on photo order, lighting and listing images, see the Etsy product photos article.

Structuring sizes and colors for print on demand products

As the number of variations grows, choosing gets harder; especially on mobile, picking from several long menus can tire the buyer. Keep the structure simple:

  • Fewer but right colors: Choose colors on which the design reads well. A light-colored design disappears on a white t-shirt; don't put that color on the list.
  • Size chart: If you offer sizes, give a size chart or measurement information in the description; size problems are among the main reasons for bad reviews (see how to get reviews on Etsy).
  • Product-specific details: For t-shirt fits, see selling t-shirts on Etsy; for hoodies and sweatshirts, see selling sweatshirts and hoodies on Etsy.
  • Don't repeat options in the title: Instead of writing "S M L XL black white navy" in the title, describe the product the buyer is searching for; the options already appear in the variations.

How does Printmeet create variations?

In Printmeet, you choose the colors for each product on the product selection screen (up to 10 colors per product) and set your profit per size in the pricing step. When you send the product to Etsy, the listing's inventory is created automatically:

  • The sizes you selected are added as the Size variation, and the colors as the Color variation.
  • Price and SKU are written separately for each size–color combination, so when an order comes in, the right product, size and color go to production.
  • In a bundle product where you sell several products in one listing (e.g. t-shirt + sweatshirt + hoodie), the product type is combined with the size: the buyer chooses the product and size together from a single option such as "Hoodie - XL", and chooses the color from the second menu.

In a bundle product, if the number of product–size options multiplied by the number of colors gets too high, Etsy may not accept the listing; in that case reduce the number of colors or products. Mockups and English title and tag suggestions are prepared in the same flow; orders are printed by production partners in the USA. For details, see the Printmeet Etsy integration and how it works pages.

Common mistakes

  • Opening a separate listing for each color: Reviews and sales get scattered and the listings compete with each other.
  • Adding size and color as custom variations: You don't show up in search filters.
  • Giving all sizes the same price: Profit drops on large sizes because the cost is higher.
  • Not linking color photos: The buyer sees only the white product and orders black; their expectation may not be met.
  • Too many options: You hit the combination limit and make the buyer's choice harder.
