To create a coupon on Etsy, go to Shop Manager > Marketing > Sales and Discounts and set up a promo code, a sale, a discounted bundle or a targeted offer. A percentage discount must be a whole number between 5% and 75%. Instead, you can also offer a fixed amount off or free standard shipping. You share a promo code yourself. A sale shows the discounted price to everyone on the listings you select. Targeted offers are sent automatically by Etsy to shoppers who left an item in their cart, favorited your item or bought from you. This guide covers each tool, the stacking rules and the profit check print-on-demand sellers should do before discounting.

Etsy's 4 discount tools

Etsy's Help Center currently lists four ways to discount:

  • Promo code: A code you define. The buyer enters it at checkout. You share it on social media, by email or on a card in the package.
  • Sale: No code needed. The discounted price appears next to the original price on the listings you select or across the whole shop.
  • Discounted bundle: Gives a discount on listings bought together.
  • Targeted offers: Coupons sent automatically to interested shoppers.

Which one you choose depends on the goal. A promo code suits reaching a new audience, a sale suits a seasonal campaign, a bundle suits growing the average order, and a targeted offer suits convincing an undecided shopper. For general sales tactics, also see our guide on how to increase Etsy sales.

How to create an Etsy promo code: step by step

  1. In Shop Manager, open Marketing > Sales and Discounts.
  2. Choose the option to create a promo code.
  3. Pick the discount type: percentage off (5%–75%, whole number), a fixed amount off or free standard shipping. Free shipping can be limited to domestic orders or regions you select.
  4. Optionally set a minimum order amount, so the discount only works on orders above a certain value.
  5. Choose the redemption limit: total uses can be limited or unlimited. You can also allow each buyer to use the code only once.
  6. Save the code and its validity period.

Note: according to Etsy, a coupon's limits can't be changed after it's created. If you make a mistake, you need to deactivate the code and create a new one. Choose a short, memorable code name (e.g. WELCOME10). Since most buyers are abroad, an English code is easier to understand.

How to set up a shop sale

A sale is a discount that needs no code and is also visible in search results. You set it up on the same page with the "Run a sale" option:

  • Choose percentage off or free standard shipping.
  • Apply the discount to the whole shop or only to listings you select.
  • Set the countries where it applies and the date range.

You can run more than one sale at the same time. If a listing falls into two sales, the buyer gets the highest discount; discounts aren't added together. Raising prices before a discount to show a "fake sale" damages buyer trust and reviews. Always discount from your real price.

Discounted bundles and order minimum discounts

A discounted bundle gives a discount on products bought together. The rules:

  • A bundle can contain up to 3 listings.
  • A listing can be part of only one discounted bundle at a time.
  • Bundle discounts don't combine with other promotions.

Print on demand has natural bundles: a t-shirt + mug pair with the same design, or matching family products. An order minimum discount kicks in when the cart reaches a certain amount and encourages the buyer to add one more item.

Targeted offers: abandoned cart, favorited item, interested shopper and thank you

You turn targeted offers on once; Etsy sends them to eligible shoppers itself. The rules on Etsy's help page:

  • Abandoned cart: Sent if an item has been in the cart for more than 2 hours. It goes to the same shopper at most once every 2 days and is valid for 60 days.
  • Favorited item: Sent to shoppers who favorited your item. At most once every 2 days, valid for 60 days.
  • Interested shopper: Sent at most once every 30 days, valid for 7 days and single-use.
  • Thank you: Sent after a purchase and valid for 1 year. It encourages repeat purchases.

Don't confuse a thank-you coupon with asking for a review. Rather than giving the coupon in exchange for a review, offer it as part of a good shopping experience. For the rules on collecting reviews, see our guide on how to get Etsy reviews.

Do discounts stack?

Where eligible, a buyer can use a price discount together with free shipping on the same order. Beyond that, discounts don't stack: with overlapping sales the highest discount applies, and bundle discounts don't combine with other promotions. When planning a campaign, assume that in the worst case the buyer gets "percentage off + free shipping" and calculate your profit accordingly.

The Make an Offer tool

Etsy's "Make an Offer" tool lets buyers make a price offer on your listing. You turn it on from the same Sales and Discounts page and set a maximum discount threshold that buyers can't go below. It currently works only for sellers and buyers using USD. Once you send a final price, the buyer has 48 hours to accept. Offers don't combine with discounts other than free shipping. Offer messages are not counted in Star Seller's 24-hour response measurement.

Cyber Specials and Etsy sales events

Etsy runs opt-in sales events throughout the year. The biggest in 2026, Cyber Specials, runs from November 23 to December 1. Etsy asks for at least 25% off for this event. The deadline to opt in to be considered for Etsy's marketing features was October 27. Event participation and criteria appear on the Sales and Discounts page in Shop Manager. When choosing shops to feature, Etsy also looks at photo quality, item uniqueness and the shop's About section. For year-end planning, read our Etsy holiday and Black Friday sales calendar.

Check your profit before discounting print on demand

With handmade products, a discount mostly comes out of your labor. With print on demand, production and shipping costs don't drop with the discount. A 25% discount can wipe out all the profit on a low-priced item. Before setting a discount rate:

  1. Subtract the item's production + shipping cost and Etsy fees. For the calculation, see our guide to Etsy fees and profit calculation.
  2. Work out how much of the remaining profit you can put into the discount.
  3. Give the discount on high-margin products or bundles. Select listings instead of applying the same rate to the whole shop.
  4. If you offer free shipping, check whether you've built the shipping cost into the price.

Campaign-ready products with Printmeet

Campaign traffic only turns into sales if your listings are ready. On Printmeet you can place your design on products like t-shirts, sweatshirts or mugs, create their mockups and send them directly to your Etsy shop with English SEO titles and tags. Orders are produced and shipped by our production partners in the US, and you track order and shipping status from the dashboard. You manage discounts and coupons yourself in Etsy's Shop Manager. See how it works on the how it works page.
