Yes, you can sell AI-generated designs on Etsy, under three conditions: the design must come from your own original prompts and creative input, you must clearly state in the listing description that the item was created with AI, and you must not present AI output as handmade. Etsy tightened its AI rules in October 2026: bot-generated listings without human involvement and AI-written functional guides such as patterns and recipes were banned, and at least one unedited real photo is now required for most items. For print on demand products, using an authorized mockup is accepted as an exception. This guide walks through each rule with practical steps.

Does Etsy allow AI designs?

Etsy classifies items by the seller's role in them: items made by, designed by, handpicked by and sourced by the seller. According to Etsy's Creativity Standards, work the seller generates with AI tools from their own original prompts falls into the "designed by a seller" group. So writing your own idea into an AI image tool and selling the resulting design printed on a t-shirt, mug or poster is allowed on Etsy.

Etsy's view is this: AI should support the seller's creativity, not replace it. Buyers should be able to understand the role the seller played in every item. The rules are built on that principle. For the practical steps of creating designs with AI, see our guide to AI Etsy product design; this article covers the rules side.

AI disclosure in the description: where and how to write it

Etsy requires that if an item was created using AI, this is stated in the listing description. The disclosure doesn't have to be long; it just has to be clear and honest. Adding one sentence at the top of the description or right below the product details does the job. Examples:

  • "This design was created by our shop using AI tools and printed on demand by our production partner."
  • "Artwork generated with AI from our original prompts, then edited and prepared for print by our shop."

Since most Etsy buyers come from abroad, descriptions are usually written in English; write the disclosure in the same language as the description. For the overall structure of a description, see our guide on how to write an Etsy product description.

In addition, if you edited your listing photos with AI, Etsy asks you to note in the description that the images were edited. This gives buyers context about how the images were created.

The October 2026 update: what was banned?

With the update Etsy announced in its Seller Handbook, the following uses are explicitly not allowed:

  • Bot listings without human involvement: Every listing must involve direct human prompting, curation and creative input. Mass-generating products and listings with scripts or automation without individual human oversight is prohibited; Etsy states this may result in the shop being removed.
  • AI-written functional guides: If you sell knitting or sewing patterns, recipes or instructions, the information buyers will follow must be your own work.
  • Presenting AI output as handmade: Promoting machine-generated work as "hand drawn" is considered misleading.
  • Selling prompt bundles: Etsy does not allow prompts to be sold separately from the finished work.

Even if you use bulk tools, reviewing each listing individually before publishing is the safest way both to follow this rule and to protect quality.

Listing images: the unedited photo rule

The most discussed part of the update concerns images. According to Etsy's help page:

  • Most items require at least one unedited photo. This photo must show the actual item against a real background and must not be edited in any way.
  • In your other images you can use editing tools, including AI, to adjust lighting and color, crop, resize or change the background, as long as the image accurately shows what the buyer will receive.
  • Using AI to hide damage or to change the item's appearance in a way that could mislead buyers is not allowed.

Etsy is adding guidance to the listing form that detects AI-generated images when new images are added and shows the seller a notice and tips. Buyers will also be able to choose a misleading AI imagery reason in the "Report this item to Etsy" flag. Etsy's help page states that current reports about AI misuse won't result in immediate enforcement action and that detection tools are still being developed. This is a transition period; bringing your images in line with the rule now is the right move. For image rules and technical details, see our guide to Etsy product photos.

The mockup exception for print on demand sellers

The critical question for print on demand sellers is this: if we never handle the product, how can we have an "unedited real photo"? Etsy's help page addresses this case separately: if a production partner prints your original design on a standard base product such as a t-shirt or mug, you may use a stock photo mockup, as long as the photo's owner has authorized its use.

Things to watch when using this exception:

  • Check the license of the mockup you use or the terms of use of the tool.
  • Make sure the product color, print position and size in the mockup match the product that will actually be shipped.
  • Don't edit the mockup to make the design look bigger, brighter or a different color than it is.

We explained what a mockup is and why it affects sales in what is a mockup.

AI images for digital products

For digital downloads, the rule depends on the type of product. For digital items with visual content (printable posters, sticker files, planner pages and so on), you should show buyers a preview of the actual content. For digital items without a visual component, representative images, including AI-generated ones, can be used as long as they are not misleading. For patterns, recipes and seeds, at least one real, unedited photo of something made with the product is required; an AI image cannot be the only image used to show the finished result. For the general steps of selling digital products, see our guide on selling digital products on Etsy.

Copyright: AI won't save you

Being generated by AI does not protect a design from copyright or trademark infringement. Etsy's other policies apply to AI output exactly the same way. Designs generated from prompts that evoke a famous character, brand, logo or real person can receive infringement reports. Before publishing, check every design for logos, brand names, well-known characters and real people. For details, read our guide to Etsy copyright and trademark infringement.

Checklist for rule-compliant AI designs

  1. Create the design from your own idea with your own prompts; select, edit and prepare the output for print.
  2. Check that it contains no famous characters, brands, logos or real people.
  3. Add a sentence to the listing description stating that AI was used.
  4. If you edited photos with AI, state that in the description too.
  5. Use an authorized mockup for POD items; color and print position should match reality.
  6. Even if you use bulk tools, check each listing individually before publishing.

What to watch for when designing with AI on Printmeet

On Printmeet you can create a design with your own prompt in the AI design tool, clean up the background and generate automatic mockups on the product. After writing the English title, description and tags for Etsy, you can send the product directly to your Etsy shop; production and shipping are handled by our production partners in the US. Printmeet does not add an AI disclosure to the description automatically: remember to add the disclosure sentence yourself in the product description step. For details on creating t-shirt designs with AI, see our guide to AI t-shirt design.

Frequently asked questions

Is selling AI-generated designs on Etsy banned?

No. Etsy allows designs the seller creates with AI tools from their own original prompts and counts them as "designed by a seller" items. The conditions are that AI use is stated in the listing description and that the item is not presented as handmade.

Where do you write the AI disclosure on Etsy?

In the listing description. A short, clear sentence stating that the item was created using AI is enough. If you edited the listing photos with AI, you also need to state that in the description.

Is a real photo required for print on demand items?

According to Etsy's help page, if a production partner prints your design on a standard base product, you may use a stock photo mockup whose owner has authorized its use. The mockup must still accurately show the item the buyer will receive.

Is creating listings in bulk with AI banned on Etsy?

Mass-generating products and listings with scripts or automation without human oversight is prohibited; Etsy states it may remove the shop in that case. Using tools is allowed, but every listing must reflect your own selection, editing and review.
