An Etsy commercial use license is the set of usage terms you write yourself to define what buyers may do with the digital file you sell. Etsy does not provide a ready-made license form; you write the terms in the listing description and in a short license document you include in the download. With a personal use license, the buyer prints and uses the file only for themselves. With a commercial use license, they may sell products they make with the file. Both licenses forbid reselling the file itself. And to grant a license at all, the design must genuinely be yours. This guide explains both license types, the situations that conflict with Etsy's rules, and an example license text you can use.
Why do digital products need a license?
Someone who buys a physical t-shirt wears it. Someone who buys a digital file can copy it without limit, print it, edit it or put it on other products. If you don't state how much you allow, the buyer acts on their own interpretation. That leads to three problems:
- Disputes: The buyer may think it's fine to print your design on t-shirts and sell them, while you think you sold it for personal use only.
- Lower income: Commercial use is a more valuable right. If you don't offer it separately, you end up giving it to everyone at the same price.
- Loss of trust: Designers and small businesses hesitate to buy a file when they can't clearly see what they're allowed to do with it.
A short, clear license removes this uncertainty. If you're new to selling digital products, start with our guide to selling digital products on Etsy.
What does a personal use license cover?
A personal use license is the default option for most digital products on Etsy. In shops selling printable posters, planner pages, invitations or wall art, typical terms are:
- The buyer may print the file at home or at a print shop for their own use.
- They may give a single print as a gift.
- They may not sell, share or upload the file or its prints.
- They may not put the design on another product and sell it.
For preparing and listing printable products, see our guide to selling printables on Etsy.
What does a commercial use license cover?
A commercial use license allows the buyer to use the file in their own business. Buyers are usually designers, makers who produce their own products and small businesses. You decide which rights to grant. Common terms:
- Permitted use: Using the design on physical products such as t-shirts, mugs, stickers or prints and selling those products, or using it in client work (invitations, non-logo graphics).
- Quantity limit (optional): Some sellers limit the commercial license to a certain number of products and ask for an extended license beyond that. This is entirely your choice.
- The file itself: The buyer may not resell, share or include the file in another digital bundle. This term appears in almost every commercial license.
- Non-exclusive: State that you continue to sell the same design to other buyers. The buyer doesn't own the design; they get a right to use it.
- Credit: Say whether or not you want the designer's name credited.
The difference between license types should be stated clearly in the description, not just the title. Only add "commercial use" to your title or tags if you actually grant that right.
PLR and resell rights: why are they risky on Etsy?
Online you'll find ready-made digital bundles sold with "PLR" (private label rights) or "resell rights". They give the buyer the right to resell the file under their own name. From Etsy's point of view there is an important conflict here. According to Etsy's help page, digital items in your shop must be made and/or designed by you. Etsy's Creativity Standards also do not count a bundle, collection, scan or PDF of someone else's work, or AI prompt bundles, as "designed by a seller".
This has two consequences:
- Selling a file you bought from someone else with resell rights as-is on Etsy may conflict with Etsy's rules, even if the license allows it.
- Giving your own buyers the right to "resell this file" may steer them into breaking Etsy's rules. That's why prohibiting digital resale of the file in your commercial license is the safer choice.
If you use someone else's fonts, clipart or images
The precondition for granting a license is that you have the right to use every element in the design. Each font, clipart, texture and stock image you bought or downloaded while making the product comes with its own license. The rule is simple: you cannot give your buyer broader rights than you hold yourself. If a clipart you used is licensed for personal use only, you cannot sell that design with a commercial license. A font's license may allow product sales but prohibit distributing the font file.
Etsy says it isn't in a position to determine whether shop content infringes someone else's intellectual property, and recommends contacting the rights holder or an attorney if you're unsure. For details on copyright and trademarks, read our guide to Etsy copyright and trademark infringement.
Licensing AI-generated files
You can also sell designs you create with AI under a personal or commercial license, but there are two things to know. The first is an Etsy rule: if an item was created with AI, you must state it in the listing description. Details are in our guide to selling AI-generated designs on Etsy. The second is copyright protection: according to the US Copyright Office's January 2025 report, writing prompts alone does not give enough human control over AI output to create copyright. By contrast, creatively selecting, arranging, modifying the output or combining it with your own drawing can amount to protectable human contribution. Rules can vary from country to country. In practice, genuinely working on AI output instead of selling it as-is both makes your product original and gives your license a basis.
How to write a license: step by step
- Choose the license type: Will you offer personal use only, or commercial use as well?
- Make the commercial license a separate listing: Because digital listings on Etsy don't support variations, you can't offer a "personal / commercial" option in one listing. Opening commercial use as a separate listing or a separate "commercial license" listing is a common approach.
- List permissions and restrictions: What is allowed, what isn't, any quantity limit and credit requirement.
- Add it to the description: Put a summary of the license in the listing description where it's visible before purchase. For description structure, see our guide on how to write an Etsy product description.
- Add it to the files: Include the license text in the download as a separate file such as "LICENSE.pdf". Since Etsy lets you upload up to 5 files per listing, 20 MB each, combining multi-file bundles into one ZIP saves space.
Most Etsy buyers come from abroad, so the license should be in English. A short example you can adapt to your own terms:
- Personal use: "This file is for personal use only. You may print it for yourself or as a single gift. You may not sell, share or redistribute the file or its prints."
- Commercial use: "You may use this design on physical products you sell. You may not resell, share or redistribute the digital file itself, in whole or in part. The design is not sold exclusively."
These texts are not a substitute for legal advice. If you're planning a high-value or custom license, consult a lawyer.
Digital and physical products with Printmeet
On Printmeet you can create designs with your own prompt in the AI design tool, clean up the background and prepare your designs as digital products. You can also send the same designs as physical products such as t-shirts, mugs or sweatshirts, together with their mockups, directly to your Etsy shop. Physical products are produced and shipped by our production partners in the US. That way you can offer the same design both as a personal use digital file and as a printed product. For digital product ideas, see our guide to selling digital products.
Frequently asked questions
Is a commercial use license required on Etsy?
No. Etsy doesn't impose a license type for digital products; you decide how many rights to grant. But if you don't write terms, buyers may use the file however they interpret it. That's why adding a short license is recommended, even for personal use.
What is the difference between a personal and a commercial use license?
With personal use, the buyer prints and uses the file only for themselves and can't sell it. With commercial use, they can use the design on physical products they sell or in client work. In both cases, reselling the file itself is usually prohibited.
Can I sell files I bought with PLR or resell rights on Etsy?
It's risky. Etsy requires digital items to be made or designed by the seller, and it doesn't count bundles of someone else's work as "designed by a seller". Even if the license allows resale, selling the file as-is may conflict with Etsy's rules.
Can I sell a design I made with AI under a commercial license?
Yes, but you need to state AI use in the listing description. Also, according to the US Copyright Office, writing prompts alone is not enough for copyright protection. Creatively editing the output both makes your product original and strengthens your license.
